The autumn of 2009 and the winter of 2010 were characterized, in the Chianti Classico zone, by ample rainfall and by decidedly cold temperatures; snow arrived towards the end of 2009 and occasional snowfall continued until the early part of March. This phase of the growing season caused a sustained period of repose in their vegetative activity for the vines, and this, along with regular rainfall during the first part of spring, led to a delayed arrival of bud break compared to seasonal norms. April, May, and June, a critical moment in vine development and growth, saw much rainfall; this, together with lower than average temperatures, led to a general delay in the cycle of the growing season in all of the varieties cultivated in the Tignanello vineyard. True summer weather did not begin until the month of July which, with its elevated temperatures and a completely dry climate, contributed to an excellent development of the grape bunches and a recovery of the ripening time previously lost. The climate changed once again towards the end of July and during the first half of August, with rather low temperatures for the period and three significant rainstorms which slowed down the color change in the grapes.

This climate during the growing season made a careful selection of the grapes quite necessary, a selection aimed at limiting the production of grapes per vine and, above all, at assuring that the bunches be as healthy as possible.

Picking operations began towards the end of the month of September, a month which alternated periods of warm, sunny, and windy days with others with occasional cloudbursts, at times rather intense, followed by powerful north winds which rapidly dried both the grapes and the overall micro-climate of the vineyard. The warm days and the cool evenings and nights, instead, assisted a complete physiological ripening of the grapes.

The healthiness of the grapes, an important richness of color and aroma and a powerful varietal character were already evident as soon as the grapes reached the cellars and initial phases of fermentation began, all characteristics which suggested a vintage of a high quality level.

An intense ruby red in color, the aromas of the wine are characterized by a powerful varietal expressiveness, with ample notes of red fruit, raspberries, and liquorice. On the palate, the wine, still very young, immediately shows firm tannins with much polish and finesse as well, along with a balancing, tonic acidity and savory mineral notes which add length and persistence to the finish and aftertaste.

Humming with energy and life from the very moment you put your nose in the glass, Marchesi Antinori’s 2010 Tignanello shows magnificent aromatic layering and an enormous capacity to peel back and reveal itself in beautiful slow motion. This is an articulate wine with a long story to tell about the quality of its profound 2010 fruit. This Tignanello has the elegance of 2004 and the structure of 2007. A brief note on the structure: The mouthfeel here is not broad and big. Instead, it shows a sharp and elegantly streamlined feel with impressive persistency. Compared to 2009, the Sangiovese component is slightly higher with 80% of the noble Tuscan variety followed by 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035. Aug 2013

Antinori's 2010 Tignanello is stunning, as it has been since I started tasting the component wines in 2011. Firm yet sweet, silky tannins form the backbone for this gorgeous, vivid wine. Dark red cherries, plums, cloves, mint and sage inform a Tignanello that impresses for its delineation, nuance and power. Clean, saline notes support the mineral-drenched finish. The 2010 isn't huge, but rather is a vertical wine endowed with tremendous energy and vibrancy. I can't remember a Tignanello with this much crystalline tension and pure energy. Simply put, the 2010 Tignanello is a magnificent, towering wine from Antinori. Drink: 2016 - 2030

Tuscany

One of Italy’s most preferred regions by wine connoisseurs, the region of Tuscany is probably only rivalled for its prestige by Piedmont, in the north. Tuscany contains a number of very fine DOC and DOCG appellations within its geographical borders, and is also home to the Super Tuscans. By far the most relevant Tuscan appellation is Chianti Classico, where some incredible wines that compete at the highest level are produced. Many of these amazing Chiantis will age for over twenty years. Chianti shares Tuscany with Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, both of which produce wines of great quality. Brunello is a local variety of the Sangiovese grape. The warm temperatures coming off the coast, combined with the cool breezes from the hills, create a multitude of microclimates.

Tuscany accounts for over thirty DOC and half a dozen of DOCG wines. In addition to the great, well-known and appreciated reds, the local production includes a few distinguishable whites, the most notable among them being, without doubt, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Other delicious whites include the Bianco d'Elba, Bianco di Bolgheri, Vermentino and Bianco di Pitigliano.

Grape varieties

One of the most well known is Sangiovese the mainstay in all but one of Tuscany's seven red-wine DOCGs. In Montalcino it goes by the name Brunello, hence the name Brunello di Montalcino; in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano it is locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. Chianti, famed the world over, also features Sangiovese, as well as permitting the addition of small amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino, and international gems Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. As well as being famed for its reds, Tuscany produces some distinguished whites, one of which has achieved DOCG status: Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
