Nizza DOCG (formerly Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza) is an appellation in Piedmont, Italy. The wines are made specifically from Barbera grapes. This geographical indication was created in 2014.
The Nizza zone covers a relatively large and hilly area immediately south of Asti town, and around the town of Nizza Monferrato, for which it is named. The official regulations for the Nizza zone state that it covers the communes of Agliano Terme, Belveglio, Calamandrana, Castel Boglione, Castelnuovo Belbo, Castelnuovo Calcea, Castel Rocchero, Cortiglione, Incisa Scapaccino, Mombaruzzo, Mombercelli, Nizza Monferrato, Vaglio Serra, Vinchio, Bruno, Rocchetta Palafea, Moasca and San Marzano Oliveto.
Aside from specifying the single grape variety, regulations state that all wines must be aged in barrel for six months, and for 18 months in total before release. The figures for Riserva wines are 12 months and 30 months, respectively.
