Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

Valentini

Trebbiano may be considered as a simple grape, however Francesco Valentini has pushed the boundaries and created a legendary Trebbiano d'Abruzzo which competes with the great white wines of the world.

Made the most natural way possible. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in ancient 50/70 hl oak barrels and aged for 12 months.
Complex and fascinating with elegant floral notes of broom and officinal herbs intermingling with ripe stone fruits alongside hints of spice, vanilla, coffee and minerals. Refreshing, generous and harmonious on the palate, this is a rare wine that remains carved in the heart, destined for a very long life.

96 Points Decanter

The Valentini family have been winemakers since 1650, committed to the rustic artisanal tradition rooted in the land. They follow nature, not fashion: their Trebbiano d’Abruzzo enjoys international cult status but is released only when ready. In 2019, this eminently cellarable white produced masterfully elegant, pure results. The complex, clear bouquet leads to a memorable, profound palate, with subtle saline undertones. Substance and freshness in superb harmony: simply unforgettable. Drink 2023-2033.

95 Points Vinous

The 2019 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo displays a vivid yellow-golden color. The bouquet captures the imagination as dried apricots and peaches are complemented by almond custard and cardamon. It’s the fruit that impresses first, ripe yellow apple and young peach, followed by depths of stony minerality and enriching hazelnut traces. The 2019 keeps the taster guessing, at first juicy and remarkably fresh, then suddenly adding tension and a salty flourish that sways the sensation to the savory spectrum. This is expertly balanced, wonderfully complex and easily one of the most exciting young Trebbianos I’ve ever tasted from Valentini.

Abruzzo

Abruzzo

Abruzzo is stretching from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea, on a mainly mountainous and wild land. Winemaking traditions in Abruzzo date back to the sixth century B.C. thanks to the Etruscans, who played a major role in introducing viniculture to the area. The most favorable growing conditions are found in the low hills of Teramo, where the Colline Teramane thrives (its name means hills of Teramo). Some of the best wines infact come from the Teramo area, where a single DOCG exists for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane, while some classic rosé wines – known as Cerasuolo - are now offered under their own DOC appellation.

DOCG and DOC

Abruzzo is home to one DOCG – Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane – and three DOCs: Contro Guerra, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. The DOCG and the last DOC shoul not to be confused with the Tuscan Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Eight IGTs also exist in the region including Terre di Chieti, Colli del Sangro, Colline Frentane and Colline Pescaresi.

Grape Varieties

The star grape varieties of the area are the native red Montepulciano and Sangiovese and white Trebbiano, as well as natives such as Passerina, Pecorino and Cococciola.
