Pinot Grigio Dessimis

Vie di Romans

Pinot grigio Dessimis takes its name from the vineyard, a 7,5 hectares vineyard which produces one of the best white of Vie di Romans winery. Absolutely to try!

The two parcels of the Dessimis vineyard cover a total of nine hectares in the commune of Mariano del Friuli, at an altitude of 34 metres above sea level. Soils here are shallow and comprise of gravel and reddish-hued clay which contains ferrous and aluminium oxides, and also benefit from good drainage. The vines are 22 years old on average, planted at a density of 6000-7800 per hectare and are guyot trained and spur pruned.

The grapes were destemmed and gently crushed before undergoing a pre-fermentation cold maceration at 8ºC. Fermentation took place at controlled temperatures of 16-19ºC for 20-23 days with selected yeast strains, with malolactic fermentation stopped. The wine was then rested on its lees for nine months prior to bottling and release

The 2020 vintage was characterised by average temperatures without any extreme weather fronts. Flowering occurred on schedule thanks to the abundant spring rains that replenished the water reserves. The weather was warm and dry in the lead up to harvest and the grapes were in excellent condition, showing intense aromatics and flavours.

Friuli Venezia Giulia

Friuli Venezia Giulia

Geographyand Climate Conditions

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a wine region in the far north-eastern corner of Italy, and is bound by the borders with Austria and Slovenia. Though the wines produced in this region represent only two percent of the Italy's production, to some here is where the best whites are made.

The mountainous topography in the north and east lifts many vineyards above the low-lying cloud that is sometimes trapped between the hills and the coast. This allows the vines to bask in bright sunshine without overheating, allowing the grapes to develop full phenolic complexity and aromatic depth before their sugar levels peak.

DOCG and DOC

The region is home to three DOCG titles, all for white wines. The Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit and its Ramandolo enclave, and Rosazzo DOCG. Complementing the three DOCGs are ten DOCs with the most important represented by Friuli-Grave DOC, Lison-Pramaggiore DOC, Carso DOC which is the most eastern italian DOC, stretching around Trieste, including also part of Balcanic peninsula. Colli Orientali del Friuli and Collio Goriziano are the remainings DOC where are produced outstanding white wines.

Grape varieties

Apart for Friulano wine, other local whites include Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer Aromatico, Verduzzo and Malvasia Istriana. Among the reds produced in Friuli-Venezia Giulia are Collio Cabernet, Merlot, Pignolo, Pinot Noir, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Schioppettino, Tazzelenghe.
