The farm "Benito Ferrara" was founded in 1880 by Benito Ferrara as a grape producing firm. Nowadays, Gabriella Ferrara, daughter of Benito, is the leading the company, together with her husband Sergio Ambrosino. The Ferrara family produces tiny amounts of Greco di Tufo from their three hectares of vines in San Paolo di Tufo. Ferrara’s vines are planted on steep slopes at 450-600 meters above sea level and they lie in a hill area, rich in calcium, phosphorus, potassium and silicon, which gives a mineral and deep charachter to the wines created from those grapes.
It has to be remembered too, that in the depth of the rock there are the famous mines of sulfur. Planted about 30 years ago, the vineyard breed is “espalier”, with guyot pruning. The peculiarity of the grapes is that the cluster is divided in two, a greater and a smaller part: they are the " twin souls " or "aminae gemina". Hand-harvesting is a must and the volcanic soils are rife with chunks of yellow sulphur, a component which enhances the aromatic characteristics of the Greco di Tufo varietal. Ferrara practices organic agriculture..
