Louis Jadot
Quintessentially Burgundian
Domaine Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 however the family was making wines before that and acquired the famous Clos des Ursules in 1826. Today, they own over 150 hectares of vineyards, many of them being premier and grand cru in the Côte d’Or. Their wines benefitted from the expertise of Jacques Lardière, one of Burgundy’s finest winemakers, in the 1970s. Using minimal intervention, the wines are terroir-driven and have received critical acclaims across the globe, setting the legend of Louis Jadot in stones. Today the estate is run by Thomas Seitier with Frederic Barnier as head winemaker.
We have secure a small parcel of Meursault 2021 which is showing beautifully at present. Only a small amount of white Burgundies were produced in this challenging year, however the quality is excellent.
Louis Jadot’s Story
Louis Henry Denis Jadot created his own house in 1859 and quickly developed a bustling trade business with northern European countries before his grandson Louis-Auguste started to export to the UK and USA after the war. In 1954, André Gagey joined the family business and took over the reins in 1962. In 1970 he hired Jacques Lardière, a young œnologist, to give the house the burst of energy it needed.
In 1985, Madame Jadot decided to sell it to the Rudy Kopf family, the long-time US importer of the Louis Jadot’s wines. Today, Thomas Seiter oversees the house.
Vineyards & Winemaking
Maison Louis Jadot owns some 154 hectares of vines in Côte d’Or, the Mâconnais and Beaujolais, with 70 hectares classified as grand and premier cru plots shared between Domaine Louis Jadot, Domaine Gagey, Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot and Domaine du Duc de Magenta. They also won Château des Jacques in Moulin-à-Vent and Domaine Ferret in Pouilly-Fuissé. Easily recognised with the head of Bacchus on the label, the wines are spread across 130 appellations.
All wines are matured in oak barrels usually using a third of new oak. Malolactic fermentation is partially blocked for the production of whites to retain the acidity and finesse. Redd are fermented at unusually high temperatures and macerated for up to a month, to add depth of fruit and complexity.
2021 – The Growing Season
2021 was a challenging year marked with frost, regular rain, hail and mildew. Luckily, the warm and dry weather in late August and September helped the remaining grapes to achieve full ripeness. The whites, although available in very low quantity, are classically honed, with energy, freshness and clear terroir expression. They have lower alcohol level than previous year reaching between 12 and 13 degrees.
Meursault Louis Jadot 2021 – The Scores
Crisp, refreshing, and linear, this has a beautiful gooseberry and quince fruit character with hints of a flinty minerality. It is perhaps less rich than the white from Beaune Grèves. There is a nice tension on the palate, but with time there is a rich, almost fat impression as the wine opens up. From a one-hectare parcel that Jadot owns at the same elevation as Meursault Perrières. – 93 points Decanter
