Vie de Romans

Terroir Expertise

Vie di Romans has been consistently producing some of the best Italian Chardonnays over the past 30 years. Based in the heart of Friuli Isonzo DOC, the estate has been managed by Gianfranco Gallo since 1978. He has a deep understanding of his vineyards and vinifies each parcel individually, giving Vie de Romans’ wines the stamp of unique personality and a really good reputation in the region.

Vie de Romans’ story

The Gallo’s family has over 100 years of wine expertise. When Gianfranco acquired the estate in 1978, he started bottling the wine on site and released them to the market for the first time. 10 years later, the family decided to redevelop the vineyards to make the best use of each parcel’s climatic condition and soil quality. They also built a three-storey winery where they can vinify each parcel separately. Their wines have become symbolic of character, complexity and uniqueness.

Vineyards & Winemaking

The estate spreads across 60 hectares of vineyards. The soils are made of dolomite rocks and limestone dating back from the glacial era which soaks up whatever rainfall there is like a sponge. The climate is influenced by a cool continental wind and the warm winds that blow from the Mediterranean region. Together, they create a big variation of temperature between day and night which slows down the ripening of the grapes, allowing them to concentrate the flavours. This, combined with low yields, sustainable winemaking techniques, and Gallo’s tendency for late picking, gives his single vineyard wines great intensity and richness.

Malolactic fermentation does not usually take place for the whites. They are aged on the lees for up to a year then racked and mature for an extra year before release. Only 250,000 bottles are produced every year.
