Brunello di Montalcino Giodo 2019

Giodo

Podere Giodo is a six-hectare wine estate in Brunello di Montalcino situated between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo. The estate was set up in 2000 by Carlo Ferrini, one of the most famous winemakers in Italy largely due to his extensive research on the many clones of Sangiovese. He is also the winemaking consultant for many of the country’s top wineries, including Fonterutoli, Soldera, Petrolo, Romitorio, Talenti and many more. Carlo’s first vintage for Podere Giodo in Brunello was in 2009, producing just 3,000 bottles. The following one received his first 100 points from James Suckling marking the beginning of a success story.

The single vineyard is based in a secluded spot at 300 metres high and with a fantastic exposition facing Mount Amiata. The wine is elegant due to the emphasis on minimising extraction to keep tannins supple and balanced. Aged for 30 months in French oak barrels, plus additional time in concrete vat and a further 18 months in in the bottle.

Just 2000 cases of Giodo’s Brunello di Montalcino are made year on year. Expressive and rich in character, this is a medium to full-boded Brunello with ripe tannins and bags of elegance.

100 Points Winescritic.com

Expressive and rich in character, it shows concentration and structure in the notes of red plums, wild strawberries, cedar chunks, mandarin juice, lemon peel, chopped ginger and cracked celery. Wild thyme and marjoram set the secondary scene, but it is the character of fresh cherries, rose petals and grapefruit that delicately but presently bring grace and authenticity to the array. Medium-full body, perfectly ripe tannins of commendable beauty and an honest, subtle, enveloping finish. Exciting in the sip, you want to drink it, drink it and drink it again. Elegance and more elegance, in a wine that achieves perfection. A perfect wine, a divine wine. Better since 2025.

97 Points The Wine Independent

Made from 100% Sangiovese, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is medium garnet-purple in color. It soars from the glass with classic notions of dried cherries, tobacco leaf, and ripe redcurrants, followed by wafts of wild sage and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic red berry and mineral-inspired flavors with a racy backbone and grainy tannins, finishing with a real skip in its step.

99 Points Guia Penin

Aromas of cedar, earth, tree bark, fruit tea, black tea and cherries. Then it turns to fresh and dried flowers. Medium to full body as it grows on the palate with superb fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s structured and powerful with great length. The acid, tannin balance is incredible. Very clear and transparent. What a wine. Drinkable but better in three or four years.
