Castello di Fonterutoli

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

The first vintage of Concerto was made in 1981, when Super-Tuscan wines was getting underway. The Mazzei family realised the potential of planting nonindigenous grape varieties on their land and started to experiment with new training systems and new blends. Only made in exceptional years, Concerto has become a major player of the ‘Super Tuscans’ phenomenon.

Marking the wine’s 40th anniversary, the 2021 vintage followed a regular climatic arc: the cold winter with little precipitation was followed by an initially cool spring with adequate rainfall. The summer was hot and long, but with good diurnal temperature variations that allowed excellent completion of the grape ripening process. After an extremely rewarding harvest, with healthy grapes, in excellent phytosanitary condition, the vinification took place at a controlled temperature of 26° to 28° C for between 14 and 18 days

Grapes are sourced from Fonterutoli and Siepi vineyard, the latter being the estate’s prestigious Sangiovese and Merlot blend. Both vineyards are based on decomposed limestone and sandstone and planted with vines between 15 to 30 years old. A blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. Aromas of juicy dark and red berry fruit with hints of toast and leather and note of subtle spice. Full-bodied and complex with ripe tannins, this is a remarkable Super Tuscan.

This is very fine grained, with polished, silky tannins that provide wonderful texture and length to the wine. Plenty of cherry, blackberry, chocolate and mahogany flavors that follow through to the palate. Complex and refined. Drink after 2024, but already very elegant and beautiful.

Made with mostly Sangiovese supplemented by the structural heft and texture of Cabernet Sauvignon (that makes up roughly 20% of the blend), this is a profound and important red wine from Tuscany. The Mazzei 2019 Concerto di Fonterutoli is your proverbial steak buddy, or all-round meat wine, with abundant black fruit, spice, tannins and acidity to cut through the fat and the gristle. By a hair, I prefer the depth and intensity of the 2019 vintage compared to the 2018 vintage that I tasted at this same sitting. This wine is slightly more etched and angular, making it a good bet for extra bottle aging.

Such a fragrant and appealing burst of aromas here with milk chocolate, blackcurrants, dried herbs and flowers. A blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, this has a core of cherries and raspberries alongside savoury olive and oak elements with round, just-there tannins that give support to the fresh and lively fruit. Great power, depth and concentration. The wine is aged for 18 months in small French 225l oak barrels, 70% new, before moving to concrete tanks for four months. Drinking Window: 2024 – 2034.

Tuscany

One of Italy’s most preferred regions by wine connoisseurs, the region of Tuscany is probably only rivalled for its prestige by Piedmont, in the north. Tuscany contains a number of very fine DOC and DOCG appellations within its geographical borders, and is also home to the Super Tuscans. By far the most relevant Tuscan appellation is Chianti Classico, where some incredible wines that compete at the highest level are produced. Many of these amazing Chiantis will age for over twenty years. Chianti shares Tuscany with Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, both of which produce wines of great quality. Brunello is a local variety of the Sangiovese grape. The warm temperatures coming off the coast, combined with the cool breezes from the hills, create a multitude of microclimates.

Tuscany accounts for over thirty DOC and half a dozen of DOCG wines. In addition to the great, well-known and appreciated reds, the local production includes a few distinguishable whites, the most notable among them being, without doubt, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Other delicious whites include the Bianco d'Elba, Bianco di Bolgheri, Vermentino and Bianco di Pitigliano.

Grape varieties

One of the most well known is Sangiovese the mainstay in all but one of Tuscany's seven red-wine DOCGs. In Montalcino it goes by the name Brunello, hence the name Brunello di Montalcino; in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano it is locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. Chianti, famed the world over, also features Sangiovese, as well as permitting the addition of small amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino, and international gems Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. As well as being famed for its reds, Tuscany produces some distinguished whites, one of which has achieved DOCG status: Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
