Alberelli di Giodo Etna Rosso 2019

Giodo

Awarded three times the title ‘winemaker of the year’ and famous for making a splendid Brunello, Carlo Ferrini is one of the most celebrated consultants who has shaped Italy’s wine industry. In recent years, he fell under the irresistible spell of Mount Etna and started a new project in 2012.

Sourced from eight tiny plots of 80 to 100 years old vines, which were spared from the phylloxera, at 950m above sea level. Fermented and macerated in open-top steel vats, with gentle punchdowns but no pumpovers. Ruby colour, with aromasof pomegranate and wild strawberry alongside smoky and mineral character. Super refreshing due to both lively fruit and acidity it shows chewy velvety tannins. Only 7,000 bottles are made.

95 Points James Suckling

Dark cherries and dried flowers with pumice and spices on the nose. Medium to full body with tight, firm tannins. Racy, with wonderful depth. From old vines with an average age of 70 years. Drinkable now, but will be great in a few years.

Wow! The character and personality of this pure Nerello Mascalese is breathtaking in it's complexity and sensory depth. The scents of hot stone blend admirably with notes of black tea, gunshot powder, bergamot, pomegranate, burnt wheat and liquorice. The authoritarian secondary scene alternates wet red flowers and Mediterranean hints of oregano and marjoram. Medium bodied, rounded tannins of very fine grain and a savoury finale, exciting in every sip. The best Alberelli di Giodo ever produced. Drink now or hold.

96 Points Robert Parker

The Alberelli di Giodo 2019 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese is a wine true to its volcanic roots. This elegant grape variety reveals a tight embroidery of aromas with wild rose, sour cherry, white pepper and campfire ash. The tannins are polished and long, and this deftly made Nerello Mascalese is endowed with plenty of natural freshness and tart berry flavors that drive a long, nuanced finish. This is another super star bottle from winemaker Carlo Ferrini.

Sicily

Sicily

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Blessed with consistently bright sunshine and reliably moderate rainfall, the classic Mediterranean climate is ideally suited to the needs of wine-bearing grape vines. The soils, and the mountains from which they came, are of particular interest when it comes to studying Sicilian viticulture.

Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano at 10,930ft (3330m), is responsible for the mineral-rich, dark soils which characterize the Etna DOC. Vineyards are now being planted higher up on the volcanic slopes, to capitalize on the cooler air and richer soils there. Fifty miles (80km) south, the Iblei Mountains stake their place in eastern Sicilian wine. On their lower slopes and the coastal plains below them, the DOCs of Siracusa, Noto and Vittoria sweep from east to west, forming a crescent which mirrors the arcing coastline.

Grape Varieties

In terms of red-wine varieties, the most common after Nero d'Avola is Grecanico, accompanied by small quantities of Alicante (Grenache), Perricone, and Frappato, the latter being the key ingredient in Sicily’s only DOCG wine Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Sibling varieties Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are also small players in terms of volume, but are of vital importance around Mount Etna. In regard of white wines the principal grape varieties are: Cataratto, Inzolia, Grillo, and Carricante
