Sauvignon Blanc Piere Vie di Romans 2021

Vie di Romans

Vie di Romans is based in the heart of Isonzo, where Gianfranco Gallo's 50 hectares of vineyard produce about 250,000 bottles a year. The soil is stony and glacial, and soaks up whatever rainfall there is like a sponge. A cool east wind causes a big difference between day and night temperatures, which in turn slows ripening and allows the grapes to accumulate a great deal of flavour. This, along with the low yields Gallo achieves, and his proclivity for late picking, gives single vineyard wines of great intensity and richness. As a result, he releases the wines a year later than usual.

This wine is straw yellow in colour. On the nose, there are intense aromas of fresh pear, gooseberry with sweet pastry and spicy notes. The wine has excellent balance in the mouth and showcases a rounded, fuller style of Sauvignon Blanc and the freshness that is characteristic of this region. The finish is long and lingering.

Friuli Venezia Giulia

Geographyand Climate Conditions

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a wine region in the far north-eastern corner of Italy, and is bound by the borders with Austria and Slovenia. Though the wines produced in this region represent only two percent of the Italy's production, to some here is where the best whites are made.

The mountainous topography in the north and east lifts many vineyards above the low-lying cloud that is sometimes trapped between the hills and the coast. This allows the vines to bask in bright sunshine without overheating, allowing the grapes to develop full phenolic complexity and aromatic depth before their sugar levels peak.

DOCG and DOC

The region is home to three DOCG titles, all for white wines. The Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit and its Ramandolo enclave, and Rosazzo DOCG. Complementing the three DOCGs are ten DOCs with the most important represented by Friuli-Grave DOC, Lison-Pramaggiore DOC, Carso DOC which is the most eastern italian DOC, stretching around Trieste, including also part of Balcanic peninsula. Colli Orientali del Friuli and Collio Goriziano are the remainings DOC where are produced outstanding white wines.

Grape varieties

Apart for Friulano wine, other local whites include Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer Aromatico, Verduzzo and Malvasia Istriana. Among the reds produced in Friuli-Venezia Giulia are Collio Cabernet, Merlot, Pignolo, Pinot Noir, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Schioppettino, Tazzelenghe.
