Brunello 2019 - A Historical Vintage
With many 100 points wines
2019 was described as an easy vintage by many producers. Due to cooler temperature, the wines are pure with crunchy fruits. There is also a focus on producing single vineyards and terroir-driven wines, making this vintage very exciting for Brunello di Montalcino and amongst the best. Many winemakers think this will be a historical vintage and are comparing it to 2016.
I’m happy to report that the current releases from Montalcino are an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation... Montalcino continues to create world-class wines of the highest calibre and, in most case, at reasonable price points. - Eric Guido, Vinous
If you look at the grape-growing season for 2019 in Montalcino, you might expect the region to have made some of its best Brunello di Montalcino ever. In fact, I found two perfect wines during my blind tastings of more than 200 different 2019 Brunellos - James Suckling
What is Brunello?
Meaning ‘little dark one’, Brunello is the local name for Sangiovese Grosso, another clone of the variety. Montalcino is located in the south of Tuscany and has a drier and warmer weather than Chianti. Sangiovese grapes, here, ripe sooner resulting in very concentrated wines and for this reason, Brunello is one of the most long-lived wine on the planet. The wines are powerful, concentrated, and structured and must be aged for at least four years with a minimum of 2 years in oak and an extra year for Riserva.
A short history of Brunello
Clemente Santi is known for making the first Brunello. In the old days, most Tuscan wines used to be co-fermented until Clemente vinified his Sangiovese grapes around Montalcino separately. A few decades later, the first Brunello was released. The production remained small (only 11 producers) until Brunello earned its own appellation in the 1960s. Today, there are around 200 winemakers dedicated to its production, with most focussing on single vineyards and terroir-driven wines in recent years.
Montalcino's Terroir
Just like most wine regions, exposition, slope and wind are important factors when growing grape, however, altitude plays a major role in Montalcino and can vary between 200 and 600 metres above the sea. The higher the vines, the more acidity in the grapes meaning the wines deliver fresher aromatics.
Most of the area is composed with marl mixed with calcareous soil on top of a base of clay which results in full-bodied and age-worthy wines. Towards the south, the soils are more sandy meaning more aromatic wines with softer tannins.
Is Brunello a good investment?
Being a small wine region with many powerful wines made by talented winemakers and produced in small quantity, Brunello has the potential to play a bigger role in the wine investment market. Although the wines do not benefit from the same fame than their Super Tuscan neighbours, they are regarded as the most age-worthy wines on the planet.
Cupano, made by Podere Centine, is a great example of Brunello’s potential. First released in 2000, the quality has been consistent over the years, and the wine has always achieved great scores. The 2016 was released at £70 IB and is now trading at almost twice the price, making it one of the best wine investments to be found in such a short period. With the 2019 being compared to this historical vintage, this could be the perfect time to invest.
2019 - The Growing Season
It started with a very wet spring with few heat spikes preparing the vines for the summer ahead. Temperatures in July and August were hot during the day with cooler temperature at night than recent years while September was warm, allowing for a long ripening season. The result is generously aromatic wines with juicy fruit and structure. The vintage has been compared to 2016, a classic in Brunello, however, it seems more approchable in its youth.
