Fonterutoli's Gran Selezione

The Ultimate Terroir Expression

In 2023, The Gran Selezione from Fonterutoli achieved a new height each receiving its own UGA (Additional Geographical Units). This new classification aims to reflect the homogeneity and identity of specific areas within Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.

Some of the best examples are found at Castello Fonterutoli. Owned by the Mazzei family, the estate promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. They produce three Gran Selezione - Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiòla - and each have earned the new UGA classification.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Fonterutoli

Sourced from Castellina (UGA) where the soils are composed of rocky Alberese, with a high limestone content and chalk. The vines benefit from a South and Southwest exposition bringing high temperature during the day while the surrounding woodland cools down the vines at night.
Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new), this Chianti is the perfect combination of elegance, structure and mineral character.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36

Castelnuovo Berardenga (UGA) benefits from a good sun exposure. This is a true experimental vineyard where the 36 biotypes of Sangiovese are planted located at 350m high on a plateau that benefit from a wide diurnal temperature range combined with a mix of chalk, clay and limestone soils.
Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new), Vicoregio is intense and full-bodied with a bright bouquet. A pure-bred Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiola

Radda (UGA) is the highest plot with an altitude of 570 meters. Due to its southeast and southwest exposition, the climate is fresher with the lowest daily temperatures of the estate combined with shist and sandstone soils.
Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (50% new), Badiola is a chianti with great elegance and freshness revealing lovely wild berry fruits.
