‘Grand Cru’ from the Andes
One of Agentina’s top winery, Cheval des Andes is the result of the union between Château Cheval Blanc, Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” of Saint Emilion, Bordeaux and Terrazas de los Andes, a pioneer of cool-climate and high-altitude winemaking in Argentina. Benefiting from the savoir-faire of a great Bordeaux, the wine is characterised with freshness, elegance and exceptional ageing potential making it a grand Cru of the Andes.
Established in 1999 in Luján de Cuyo, a premium region in northern Mendoza, Cheval des Andes boasts a distinctive blend of ancient, ungrafted Malbec vines and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are sourced entirely from two high-altitude vineyards: Las Compuertas in Luján de Cuyo, the oldest and most classic winegrowing region of Mendoza, and La Consulta, in the Uco Valley, further South. Nestled at the base of the Andes cordillera, this exceptional two terroirs produce a wine marked by its freshness and elegance, poised for graceful aging. Each vintage has a distinct character with every grape variety flourishing in a meticulously chosen setting to unveil its utmost potential.
Since 2012, Cheval Blanc's expertise has increasingly influenced Cheval des Andes. This deepened with the arrival of Gérald Gabillet, a Bordeaux-trained French viticulturist and winemaker, who now operates under the guidance of Pierre Olivier Clouet, Cheval Blanc’s technical maestro. Together, they've optimized the irrigation system to naturally ensure vibrant flavors, mature tannins, and eliminate any hints of green notes. In their quest for the perfect flavor balance, the winery has also calibrated the synergy between oak and wine to enhance fruit essence. Through extensive trials, they've adopted larger volume containers (400-liter and 25-hectoliter foudres) and even incorporated barrels from an Austrian craftsperson.
Today, thanks to the dedication of devoted viticulturists and the expertise of the Château Cheval Blanc team, the wine has become a true Andes "grand cru," a testament to its legacy and craft. Cheval des Andes has been receiving in high scores consistently, with the last 5 vintages above 97 points from Robert Parker and the 2017 vintage receiving 100 points from James Suckling. The wine was first distributed by the Place de Bordeaux in 2019 and the production has remained limited to a maximum 100.000 bottles each year. It has an excellent price to quality ratio if compared with current first growth from Bordeaux and is very sought after in USA, rivalling the best Napa Valley Cabs in terms of quality and prices.
