Newly Released Tuscan Classics get Great Scores from Antonio Galloni

As readable from the Liv-Ex chart above, two of the most notable wines among his scores were Mazzei’s Castello di Fonterutoli “Siepi” 2019 and Antinori’s Tenuta Tignanello “Solaia” 2018. Both received high scores, 99 and 98 respectively. Galloni noted that the Siepi was a “total knock-out”, while the Solaia “continues to develop beautifully”.
The two highest-scoring wines, however, both with 100-points, were Fontodi’s Flaccianello della Pieve 2018 and Castello dei Rampolla’s D’Alceo 2017. Galloni said he “loved” the Flaccianello della Pieve, which “exudes vibrancy, energy and class from start to finish”, while the D’Alceo “possesses mind-blowing intensity and pedigree to burn. In a word: epic”.

Read Galloni's reviews on Flaccianello, Siepi and Solaia:

Flaccianello 2018, Fontodi - 100 Points:
"The 2018 Flaccianello della Pieve is another stellar wine from Fontodi. It is the richest Flaccianello ever made (in terms of dry extract), with elevated acidity that trails the 2016 by just a touch, but it does not taste like that at all. Dark cherry, violet, lavender, spice, mocha and graphite build with a bit of time in the glass. Like the Sorbo, the 2018 Flaccianello is not a wine of size, as in most previous years, but rather a wine that exudes vibrancy, energy and class from start to finish. I absolutely loved it."

Siepi 2019, Castello di Fonterutoli - 99 Points :
"The 2019 Siepi continues a trend towards greater finesse and nuance in this wine. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice, licorice and plum meld together effortlessly in the glass. Dense and layered, with striking detail, the 2019 is so impressive. The flavors are bright, bold and punchy. An exceptionally beautiful and riveting wine, the 2019 is rich and concentrated, but not at all heavy. What a total knock-out."

Solaia 2018 - 98 Points:
"Antinori’s 2018 Solaia captures all of the elegance of this important vintage. The bouquet alone is mesmerizing. It speaks to the stunning beauty and pedigree of Cabernet Sauvignon as grown at the Antinori family’s Tignanello property. Sweet scents of crème de cassis, lavender, graphite, mint, spice and espresso lead into a fine, delineated palate. Bright and energetic, Solaia is decidedly medium in body in 2018, with striking purity and exceptional beauty. I can’t remember ever tasting a young Solaia with this much sheer appeal and balance in the early going. In 2018 Solaia is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 7% Cabernet Franc. Production is down to around 60,000 bottles because of strict selection."
