Piedra Infinita

Zuccardi's Jewel from the Andes

Located in the Uco Valley, the Zuccardi family has been focussing on producing terroir-driven wines for three generations. Piedra Infinita is their most exquisite vineyard sitting 1100 metres above the sea in the IG Paraje Altamira. Three wines are produced here: Piedra Infinita, Supercal and Gravascal.

Zuccardi’s Story

Three generations of the Zuccardi family have spent their lives in the Uco Valley working the land to best express all of the unique terroir they find, and their Piedra Infinita vineyard is the jewel in the family crown and home to their winery.

Sebastián Zuccardi took the initiative in 2008 to establish a research and development area in the winery with a sole purpose of studying the terroir and diverse variables that affect wine quality in scientific detail. The goal in his own words was “not to strive for perfect wines, but wines that express the place, the region”. Piedra Infinita is a remarkable example of the family’s pursuit of faithful interpretation of their home – the effort and determination to clear the surface stones from the vineyard for the winery building and vine planting alone led the family to name it Piedra Infinita, or Infinite Stones in English.

Vineyard & Winemaking

The Piedra Infinita vineyard sits at 1100m above sea level in the IG Paraje Altamira, the heart of the alluvial plain of the Tunuyán River. The soil composition varies significantly because of the depth and concentration of calcium. In this vineyard everything is managed precisely, from pruning to harvesting, not just block-by-block, but row-by-row. All wines are fermented in concrete tanks with native yeasts and aged in used 500l old oak barrels.

2018 - The Growing Season

2018 was a cold and dry vintage, which resulted in very healthy grapes and wines of elegance, finesse, and exceptional quality. Luis Gutierrez (WA) stated the Zuccardis “have fine-tuned these single-plot wines tremendously since the initial and almost experimental 2015; in this 2018 wine, I found lots of similarities with the Finca Piedra Infinita bottling—it really excels”.

2018 – The Scores

Supercal 2018

Sourced from a small plot of just 0.78ha from the west side of the Piedra Infinita vineyard, which has a unique alluvial and limestone soils covered with rocks, hence the name Supercal (Super Calcáreas). Secure you allocation now.

There is a strong iron note in the 2018 Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal, a Malbec from a small plot within Piedra Infinita, usually the first plot to be harvested within Piedra Infinita. It's an extreme plot, very shallow and with pure stone and a strong character. They found this plot in search for "cal," pure limestone, so they want a strong sensation of chalk in the wine here. This is austere, and I think it's more precise than in previous vintages. Only 1,000 bottles were filled in August 2019.98 points Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Rich, exotic aromas of rich berries and peaches with some flowers and hints of walnuts, following through to a full body with firm tannins and a juicy finish. Pretty, fine and dusty tannins. Juicy finish. Delicious now or hold.97 points James Suckling

Gravascal 2018

Sourced from a small parcel of just 0.73ha on the northeast the Piedra Infinita vineyard where the limestone and gravel soils are covered with rocks, hence the name Gravascal (Gravas Calcáreas). Secure your allocation now.

The 2018 Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal has notes reminiscent of some wines from the Northern Rhône, a combination of orange peel, blood and iron, denoting freshness and minerality, with a chalky sensation and a finish that is a mixture of juiciness, stoniness, saltiness and texture. It comes from a 0.51-hectare plot in the Piedra Infinita. The wine fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured in concrete until bottling. I think they have fine-tuned these single-plot wines tremendously since the initial and almost experimental 2015; in this 2018 wine, I found lots of similarities with the Finca Piedra Infinita bottling—it really excels. It finishes with a sapid and salty sensation and marked chalkiness. Finesse, elegance, simply superb! 1,100 bottles were filled in August 2019100 points Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Blueberries, burnt orange, iodine and roses on the nose. Hints of graphite and tar, too. Full-bodied with ultra fine tannins that envelop the wine. The fruit is pure and precise, displaying uncanny discretion in the ripeness factor. Terrific length and texture at the finish. Beautiful to taste now, but will be so much better in 2024.98 points James Suckling
