Pomino 2020

Frescobaldi

From one of the most suitable areas in Tuscany for the production of white wines, reaching heights of up to 700 metres above sealevel, comes asuperbly elegant and refined blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco.

The first few months of the year were marked by quite significant rainfall, which provided the vineyards with an excellent water supply from the outset. During the second half of April, there was asharp drop in temperatures, which rose again in May. The fruit set was perfect and benefited from dry and slightly windy conditions. Thanks to the exceptional weather in May/June, the plants were perfectly healthy, resulting in wonderful fruit development and grape growth. The total lack of rainfall during the harvesting period resulted in afantastic harvest with perfectly aromatic and wholesome grapes.

The grapes were harvested with the utmost care and attention. The care taken in the vineyard and subsequent processing at the cellar helped to ensure outstanding quality. From the moment they arrived at the cellar, the grapes and, consequently, the musts were processed, with exposure to oxygen kept to a minimum. The pressing cycles were selected to ensure gentle extraction of the musts. Alcoholic fermentation took place in steel tanks and, partially, in French oak barriques, all at acontrolled temperature. At the end of production, Pomino Bianco was left to age in the bottle. Only after this subsequent period was the wine ready to tantalise taste buds with its structure and explosive freshness.

Pomino bianco 2021 is a white with a marvellous, bright straw-yellow colour. The nose reveals citrus notes like citron, as well as hints of green apple and pear. Floral notes include wisteria, chamomile, lily and gorse. Finally, there is a delicate sensation of exotic fruit, like pineapple. On the palate, it is beautifully fresh with asplendid mineral quality. This exceptionally balanced wine is fresh and fulfilling, with tastes and smells that correspond beautifully.

Tuscany

One of Italy’s most preferred regions by wine connoisseurs, the region of Tuscany is probably only rivalled for its prestige by Piedmont, in the north. Tuscany contains a number of very fine DOC and DOCG appellations within its geographical borders, and is also home to the Super Tuscans. By far the most relevant Tuscan appellation is Chianti Classico, where some incredible wines that compete at the highest level are produced. Many of these amazing Chiantis will age for over twenty years. Chianti shares Tuscany with Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, both of which produce wines of great quality. Brunello is a local variety of the Sangiovese grape. The warm temperatures coming off the coast, combined with the cool breezes from the hills, create a multitude of microclimates.

Tuscany accounts for over thirty DOC and half a dozen of DOCG wines. In addition to the great, well-known and appreciated reds, the local production includes a few distinguishable whites, the most notable among them being, without doubt, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Other delicious whites include the Bianco d'Elba, Bianco di Bolgheri, Vermentino and Bianco di Pitigliano.

Grape varieties

One of the most well known is Sangiovese the mainstay in all but one of Tuscany's seven red-wine DOCGs. In Montalcino it goes by the name Brunello, hence the name Brunello di Montalcino; in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano it is locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. Chianti, famed the world over, also features Sangiovese, as well as permitting the addition of small amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino, and international gems Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. As well as being famed for its reds, Tuscany produces some distinguished whites, one of which has achieved DOCG status: Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
